Laura Covington, PhD, LICSW

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in DC, MD, VA, and PA, Dr. Covington has experience providing assessments and counseling with individuals, families, and groups in a variety of settings. She has a special interest in reproductive health and reproductive traumas, with a focus on the military and combat-related injuries that impair fertility. Dr. Covington provides counseling to individuals, couples and groups, where she offers an safe environment to discuss issues around developing strategies for stress and coping during fertility treatment, grief and loss related to reproductive health, disclosure around third party reproduction, decisions around ways to grow a family, and all facets of assisted reproduction. She also collaborated with the National Institute of Health (NIH) researching patients’ current medical and psychosocial needs around Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI). Dr. Covington has author a number of chapters on authored the chapter infertility after military injury, known donation, sex and trauma, counseling patient during infertility, etc.

Dr. Covington received her Master of Social Work (MSW) from Boston College in 2007 and her PhD from Bryn Mawr College, Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research in 2018. Her dissertation topic was on the biopsychosocial recovery of military-related injuries that impair fertility and subsequent views on family development. Sharon N. Covington, MSW, LCSW-C

Mrs. Covington received her degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning in 1973 and is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, with almost 50 years of clinical experience as an adult psychotherapist and over 40 years working in reproductive medicine providing infertility counseling services. She is an internationally recognized leader on the psychological aspects of reproductive health problems and is widely published on the topics of pregnancy loss, stillbirth, infertility, and other reproductive health issues.

Mrs. Covington is pleased to announce her recent publication of the 2nd Edition of her text, Fertility Counseling: Clinical Guide and Case Studies, which is now in two volumes: Clinical Guide (Vol. 1) and Case Studies (Vol 2)  and are considered essential guides in reproductive mental health. She is, also, the co-author and editor of the classic text, Infertility Counseling: A Comprehensive Handbook for Clinicians. Mrs. Covington has contributed textbook chapters, clinical manuscripts and research studies in numerous other scientific and clinical publications, and wrote Silent Birth: If Your Baby Dies, a patient booklet on pregnancy loss used by many hospitals nationwide. Post, Washingtonian Magazine, Savvy, ePregnancy, Web MD, Social Work Today, and Resolve’s Family Building Magazines. Mrs. Covington received a national honors for her work from RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine for her professional contributions over 35 years. She, also, was nominated by her peers as a Washingtonian Magazine “Top Therapist” in their last list of best mental health specialists in the area and is a contributor on PsychWire, a website bringing resources together from world-leading experts in behavioral science.

Mrs. Covington is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Washington, D.C. In addition, she is Director of Psychological Support Services at Shady Grove Fertility and was an Associate Investigator, Intramural Research Program on Reproductive and Adult Endocrinology (NICHD) at the National Institutes of Mental Health. In 1981, Mrs. Covington co-founded M.I.S. (Miscarriage, Infant Death, and Stillbirth) support group in Metro Washington, D.C. She is an active professional member of Resolve, the National Infertility Association, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), having been a founding member and past chairman of their Mental Health Professional Group (MHPG), as well as serving on the Executive Committee of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).

Carol Toll has an extensive background working with individuals, families and groups. She has a special interest and expertise in issues related to women’s health, fertility and families created by third-party reproduction. She co-authored, with Patricia Sachs, MSW, LCSW-C, the chapter ‘Counseling Recipients of Nonidentified Donor Gametes’ in Fertility Counseling: Clinical Guide and Case Studies, 2nd edition edited by Sharon Covington, MSW, LCSW-C and together published research on the demographics of anonymous egg donors. She has a B.A. Degree in Social Service and an M.S.W. degree from the Catholic University School of Social Work. Ellen Eule has decades of experience as a Board Certified Diplomate and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, since she graduated from Catholic University School of Social Work.  Prior to joining Covington and Hafkin in 2002, she worked in various settings counseling individuals, couples and families, both long and short term.  Mrs. Eule has a special interest in helping people build their families “whether that journey takes a traditional route or a circuitous one through fertility treatment, third party reproduction and/or adoption, or coming to the decision to remain child free, I stay present and aware of the unique needs of every client.” Following a few sessions, decisions as to the best course of treatment are arrived at collaboratively. She sees patients virtually who are located in Maryland and can see patients in person in her Bethesda office. Carol S. Miller, LCSW, has worked in the field of loss, grief and bereavement for over 30 years, in support group, agency and private practice settings. She holds certifications as a Creative Grief Support Practitioner, a Compassionate Bereavement Care® Provider, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and a Certified Grief Educator. Ms. Miller has worked in both organizational, private practice and volunteer settings, working with individuals, couples and groups.She has a special interest in grief and trauma as it relates to fertility issues and pregnancy losses, and has worked extensively with the LGBTQ population as well (Mautner Project, Whitman Walker Clinic).
